Why Glass Kitchen Worktops Are The Best Choice For Long Term Durability
Although a great deal has been said and written about glass splashbacks, not quite as much noise has been made regarding glass kitchen worktops. Perhaps this is partly because when you look at a kitchen one of the most striking elements is the splashback as this acts almost as a backdrop to everything else, facing you flat on so that you see almost all of it in one go. Yet not only do glass kitchen worktops have a great deal to offer in terms of this same appearance, but they have an enormous amount to offer in practical terms too.
This is important because whilst it’s easy to get wrapped up in the way a kitchen looks, enthusing about things such as the colour and style of your splashbacks, the type of material and colour used for your kitchen units and even details such as the handles on the drawers, it’s easy to overlook the fact that after this initial excitement has worn off you will be using your kitchen on a daily basis. In fact several times a day, every single day, you’ll end up both spending a good deal of time in your kitchen, and using it for a wide variety of food preparation tasks.
This is why it is so important to get it right when making those initial choices about materials, layouts and features which will either help to maximise your efficiency in the kitchen for ever more, or begin to infuriate you because you spent too long thinking about looks and forgot about substance.
So what is it about glass kitchen worktops which makes them such an ideal choice for both that initial ‘wow factor’ as well as long term satisfaction? Although it is easy to think of glass as being fragile and delicate, like the kitchen window through which a football might well be launched at any moment, or the wine glass which seems to shatter the moment it starts to even wobble slightly, the truth is that glass is a very tough material, highly resistant to high temperatures and very hard to scratch.
If you take a look in almost any kitchen you’ll find glass used in a number of places where its very toughness and durability are relied upon. From the icy cold temperatures of your fridge where glass is used for the shelves, to the oven door and microwave door where temperatures might well exceed 200 degrees Celsius, glass is ideal for those extremes of temperature where many other materials would simply fail. Metal transfers heat too easily and represents a danger, stone such as granite and even quartz can expand, contract, chip and fracture, and wood will obviously absorb moisture in your fridge or simply burst into flames if used near your oven!
Glass then is ideal for these high temperatures, and let’s not forget that often icy cold or even frozen items will be regularly placed on worktops, with boiling hot pans placed on the exact same spot just seconds later. Glass is perfect for this, but there are other benefits too. If you look at many casserole dishes they are made of glass, as are most food preparation boards or chopping boards. This is because they are tough, strong, and largely scratch resistant.
Although resisting scratches is good from the point of view of looks, it’s also important to be aware that even a slight chip or scratch presents bacteria with the perfect breeding ground. So glass kitchen worktops offer a material which is tough and durable, able to withstand both extremes of temperature and rapid temperature changes and is largely resistant to cuts, scratches and chipping, For a healthy and hygienic kitchen that’s built with more than just outstanding beauty in mind, glass is definitely an option you should put in the frame.

Where can I find glass inserts for our kitchen cabinets?
Our home came with new cabinets in the kitchen, but no glass in the cabinets. I’d like to find the bubbled old “seeded” type of glass if possible. Where is the best place to look?
I have tried HomeDepot and they said it would be very difficult to order just the glass and they didn’t know where to send us. Thanx to all who reply!!
do a keyword search for glass stores in your area. Then, call them and ask if someone could take the measurements.
