Chandelier Colonial

How to find the ceiling jousts to hang something?

i am trying to hang a non-electrical chandelier on the ceiling – i need to locate the ‘stud’ or joust for secure mounting… any easy way??? house 165 years old – two story colonial..

Both of the above answers will work. The only reason I am answering is to offer my personal experience with both methods.

I have a stud finder that will lie to me. I’m not sure why (yet) but it does. When I use that tool (I have two) I always locate the stud several times before I drill or start driving fasteners. Also, in a home 165 years old everything may be plaster. If the lathe used is metal, it might drive your stud finder crazy. Granted at 165 years you are probably pre-metal lathe but it is still something to consider. I have a stud finder with two depth of penetration settings, it’s handy but it is also the one prone to lie to me. It is the one I would try under your circumstance.

The tap and listed technique requires a fairly good ear. Practice the technique until you are satisfied you have it down. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t brain surgery, it’s just one of those things where you can be fooled.

I’m not trying to scare you away from the job, just letting you know what to lookout for. Now GO get ‘em. And GOOD LUCK
